Jeff Update

Jeff’s Corner Hey, Hey, Hey Today I’d like to share a couple of personal updates with all you faithful followers of Jeff’s Corner. First, to quote our General Manager extraordinaire Julie Herbort, I’ve been “traded” to our Main Street location in downtown Fredericksburg for my colleague Chuck on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Details of the swap are murky, but rumors have it there were numerous draft picks involved and large sums of cash.

2017 Cabernet Trois

Jeff’s Corner

Howdy, Hola, and Hello,

Two Saturdays ago we released the new 2017 Cabernet Trois and guess what: it’s been stealing the show every single day. Our longest tenured red wine (produced first in 1991), this Texas beauty is very true in style to all the great wines that have come before it.

I’m a little fickle from vintage to vintage about my favorite GCV wine, but for the duration Cab Trois is by far my best-loved. It sneaks into my glass almost every night after work when I’m not looking, and the ’17 is the first vintage to feature the sleek new Black Label.

October Wine Club

Jeff’s Corner Hey, Hey, Hey, The much anticipated October wine allocation is finally here (it’s been a long time since June). It will be available for pick-up this weekend as soon as your order is processed, and will be shipped Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday next week. Wine Club members are typically the first to receive new vintages before they go “public”, and if you’re in the Black Label Club you will get the new ’17 Merlot, and if you’re in the Mixed Club you will enjoy the ’17 Cabernet Trois. Here are the tasting notes I’ve written for these lovely wines, and when they are released on the tasting bar, I’ll post a more comprehensive story on each. Cheers!

Saccharomyces Ellipsoideus (yeast)

Jeff’s Corner Howdy, Hola, and Hello I was in the winery not long ago loving the smell of yeast and fermentation and fresh grape juice when I remembered a story about yeast I wrote a few years ago. So here it is again, one more time. The cute fable at the end was a story I told in my very first Jeff’s Corner, sometime in early 2010:

Goodbye, Doug

Jeff’s Corner Hello, Hello, and Howdy I’m going to turn back the clock to New Year’s Eve, 2009. We were at Brian’s house for his annual staff party (the staff was much smaller then), and Brian made an exciting announcement that Doug and Kelly were joining our team in January.   I missed the preface to this and thought, what the crap, Doug and Kelly are the two Health Inspectors in Fredericksburg. In reality, Kelly is Brian’s sister, and Doug his brother-in-law. This began the metamorphosis into what GCV is today. Doug’s job was Operations Manager.

Vintage Update: 2016 Mosaic

Jeff’s Corner Kath and I were enjoying some porch therapy the other evening and I pulled the cork on a 2016 Mosaic and Great Googly Moogly, it was drinking great! So, I thought why not make some notes and share them with all of you.

Owner’s Club Terroir Tasting Notes

Jeff’s Corner Hopefully we’ll have some new releases to talk about soon, but in the meantime I have a couple more updates to share. A few weeks ago we did our annual tasting of the new 2017 Heath Vineyards wines from our Paso Robles vines. I was “forced” to sit down with Brian, Jennifer, Jason and crew to taste and evaluate the new vintage.

Terroir Tastings

Jeff’s Corner Hey Hey Hey Today we are going to talk about a few things. First, I want to thank you for all the great feedback on last week’s story. I liked it a lot as well, and feel it is one of the better columns I’ve written. I…

Wine Love Affair

Jeff’s Corner Hola and Hello. I’ve wanted to write this story for some time now, but somehow it always seemed to get pushed aside, but not today. A while ago, I was doing a tasting for a young man and I guess my passion was taking over and he asked me, “Exactly what is it that you like about wine so much?” Well, I have to admit, I was taken aback and stumbled through a pretty sloppy answer. All I knew was that I have had a life-long love affair with wine.

2018 Muscat Canelli

Jeff’s Corner Today, we’re going to talk about the endangered and elusive Muskrat Canary, a very strange species of Muskrat found only on the Canary Islands. It has bright yellow fur, and is easily the most beautiful species of muskrat known to humanity.
