Jeff’s Corner 7-20-17 “When friends come for Saturday night,It’s nice to make up some Sangria wine,It’s organic and it comes from the vine,It’s also legal and it gets you so high.” Great words, Jerry Jeff!  It’s summer, it’s humid, and it’s hot.  Some ice cold Sangria, some…

Wine Bottles

Jeff’s Corner 7-13-17 Howdy and Howdy After hours last Saturday, I was hanging out with some cronies from work enjoying a glass of wine when the conversation turned to wine bottles, specifically why they have different shapes and colors.  I snidely told them they should read Jeff’s Corner, but then…

Veraison Time Again

Jeff’s Corner 6-22-17 Greetings Once Again, I first posted this story last year in early July.  I like it because it reinforces the cyclical nature of our lives in rhythm with the vines, and I really like the photo simply because it’s really pretty. Veraison began last week in the…

Dry, Sweet, and everything in between…

Jeff’s Corner 2-22-27   Buenes Noches, y Bon Soir First, a very nice to see you, Sarah Keller last Thursday at the vineyard. Somehow, you just may have read more Jeff’s Corners than I have actually written! Enjoy the Heath wines you purchased, they are something else! An important part…

Sparkling Wine

Jeff’s Corner 12-27-16 With the hustle and bustle and stress of Christmas behind us, it’s time to tune in and see what’s in store for 2017. In fact, with New Year’s Eve on a Saturday night, there should be lots of “poppage” going on around the world. Since November and…

Yeast

Hello, Hello, and Howdy, A few days ago, on one of my tours, I was talking about fermentation and a guest asked me for some detailed info about yeast. So, I thought I could share a little more detailed info with all of you as well. Yeast, a single-cell fungi,…

Jeff’s Corner Bon Jour, Hola, and Howdy! Today we are going to continue from last week and talk about decanting a wine. First, however, I want to thank everyone for all the likes, comments, and support regarding last Mondays post mentioning that I had been invited again to judge the…

Aeration

Jeff’s Corner  Last Saturday, my dear friend Bill Burns and I were laughing about our suggested parameters regarding how long to let a wine “breathe”. It is, however, a serious question that comes up often from our guests. “Breathing” is wine lingo for aeration, which is the process of allowing…

Davis Mountains AVA

Jeff’s Corner  Greetings from mile high Fort Davis in far west Texas. As you read this, Kathy and I are on vaca and probably staring at the Davis Mountains from the porch on the second story of the historic Limpia Hotel. Most likely, we are drinking some Grape Creek wine…

Estate Montepulciano

Jeff’s Corner Howdy, Howdy, and one more Howdy! More than once you’ve heard me write about our block of Montepulciano vines that are beside our Wine Club Patio, and more than once I’ve talked about how the life cycle of the vines becomes one with the rhythm of the seasons…

It’s All About the Flavor

Jeff’s Corner Well, here I am behind the eye ball again after some more exciting surgery. My left eye is filled with a gas balloon, and I am indeed feeling a bit light-headed. So, we’ll check out our new Riesling next week, and in the interim here’s a story about…

To Chill or Not to Chill

Jeff’s Corner  While doing tours and tastings at Grape Creek, guests often ask me about proper serving temperatures for wine. Before we get to this, however, let me first mention that I feel strongly that there should never be rules when it comes to wine. There should be guidelines, and…
