2018 Serendipity

Jeff’s Corner

We are going to get down to some serious Serendipity stuff in a moment, but first I want to offer a very big personal and public thank you to everyone at Grape Creek for the unity and compassion we have extended to one another in these difficult times.

Not a day has gone by in the last month or so that Kathy and I have not been grateful to work for such a caring and generous company. So, here’s to Brian and Jennifer, Julie, John, Patrick, Christy and John, and everyone else that contributes to what truly is the “Grape Creek family”. Thank you all, from all of us!

Label Update

Jeff’s Corner For ten years I’ve tried to distance Jeff’s Corner from the difficult times we live in and allow it to be a sanctuary for wine lovers where we (myself included) could immerse ourselves in our passion while we learn some things and hopefully have a few laughs. The…

2018 Petite Sirah

Jeff’s Corner Well, Well, Well, Today’s Petite Sirah Day; It’s black and brooding, Volatile and moody, Angst-ridden, And oozing despair. I suppose this is a pretty melodramatic intro to our new 2018 Petite Sirah, but then Petite Sirah has always been, to me, a very…

2017 Invention

Jeff’s Corner

Hey, Hey, Hey

It’s difficult for me to remember a Grape Creek wine with a more anticipated release than our 2017 Invention. The staff, and our loyal Wine Club members, were at a fevered pitch between its debut in the Black Label December allocation and when it finally appeared on our tasting bar in early January.

Invention is 100% Texas Petit Verdot, a grape being recognized as a rising star in both the Hill Country and the High Plains. We’ll talk more about this awesome wine in a moment, but first let’s check out this very ancient grape.

Medals, medals and more medals!

Hello, Hello, Hello, Later today, I’m going to post a story about our fabulous staff event last Monday, but first I want to make a quick mention about how our wines fared at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition last week. Actually, we flat tore it up! All 25 wines…

Year 5!

Jeff’s Corner Greetings from beautiful northern Sonoma County. This morning I finished judging the very prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition for the fifth consecutive year. The SFCWC is the first (and largest) American wine competition of the year. This year we had over 6700 entries from more than 1500…

Happy New Year!

Jeff’s Corner

Hey, Hey, Hey, and Happy, Happy New Year

Well, our cat Rio Frio had a memorable first Christmas, and managed to make her way into the dog house big time. She gave Kath THREE really cool gifts, and I got nothing! No cat nip for her for a long time coming.

Anyway, we took some time out (as promised last episode), and enjoyed some quality porch therapy with some older (meaning not current) vintages of GCV wine. I didn’t make “formal” notes, but here are some thoughts the little Elf and I shared regarding some lovely wines.

2017 Merlot

Jeff’s Corner

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Habari Gani, Happy Holidays, and to cover all the bases, Seasons Greetings! As the countdown to the final frenzy accelerates exponentially, Kathy and I are going to take a deep breath and chill out. We got some great health-related news yesterday, and everything really is looking “merry and bright”.

We do have some wine to talk about, however. Our new GCV 2017 Merlot was released this week, and completes the transition of all our reds to black labels. Now it’s easy to distinguish what’s in the bottle by the label. Whites and sweets have a white label, reds a black, and the Rosé a black with silver lettering.

Hot-Buttered Rum

Jeff’s Corner Kathy and I are having a bit of a Tannenbaum crisis this year. We want to decorate our traditional tree, but we know our sweet little catten, Rio Frio, will destroy it. She gets the devil-in-the head and can’t help herself, and I can’t think of anything more beckoning than an indoor tree with lots of lights and shiny glass orbs hanging on it. So, I want to share my favorite Christmas post from a few years ago so all of you can understand just how big a threat the little fur-ball really is. Here we go…

2017 Rendezvous

Jeff’s Corner

Gobble, Gobble, Gobble

Here’s hoping everyone had a great Turkey Day yesterday and is enjoying a long, relaxing Thanksgiving weekend with friends and family. Our time together is fleeting, and should always be cherished.

Kathy and I spent a quiet day together that began with a lovely brunch of smoked salmon, bagels, cream cheese, capers, red onion and fresh fruit. This, by the way, paired wonderfully with a bottle of 2016 Heath Sparkling Adoration. The rest of the day was filled with memories, laughter, a few tears and the smell of pie baking and turkey roasting.

Heath Sparkling Cocktails

Jeff’s Corner Howdy, Howdy, Howdy It’s great to be back in my Corner again after some really good chill time in Santa Fe and Colorado visiting Kath’s sister Kerry and her hubby Bill. We’ve been close for forty years, and it’s always special when we get to share…

Happy Halloween!

Jeff’s Corner “Tis now the very witching time of night, When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out Contagion to this world.” These are some very scary lines from Hamlet that send chills up my spine every Halloween. I hope they spook you as well… On a more serious note, I haven’t heard from my dear friend Mr. Pumpkin (head of the Pumpkin Family) in a few years, and this is very disconcerting. I have no way to get in touch with him, and fear the worst. I read the other day the demand for pumpkin pie filling has increased tenfold over the last three years. Let’s hope for the best, however, and reminisce over better times in a post from exactly five years ago in Jeff’s Corner on October 31, 2014:
